The Bopportunists
OSIAN ROBERTS – TOMÁŠ BAROŠ – MAREK URBÁNEK
The Bopportunists are a saxophone-led trio dedicated to exploring the rich stream of pioneering compositions that emerged during the bebop era of the 1940s. Their repertoire consists exclusively of classic tunes by jazz greats such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Tadd Dameron, John Lewis, and many others. Whether performing “bop” compositions that transcended their time to become jazz standards worldwide, or lesser-known pieces that are rarely played today, The Bopportunists imprint the material with their own distinctive voice through original arrangements, while striving to remain faithful to the original concept and style of this music.
The saxophone trio format—saxophone, double bass, and drums—was first popularized by the legendary Sonny Rollins (himself a product of the bebop school and one of Charlie Parker’s most influential disciples) on his classic albums Way Out West, A Night at the Village Vanguard, and Freedom Suite. Since then, it has been successfully embraced by John Coltrane, Lee Konitz, Ornette Coleman, Steve Grossman, Grant Stewart, and many others.
